The recently opened Malmö outpost of Sweden’s Museum of Modern Art, from Stockholm studio Tham & Videgård Arkitekter, is both challenging, and beautiful, thanks to the new extension’s jaw-dropping, eye-popping, façade – all clad in shocking, perforated orange metal. Inside, the former electricity station – dating back to 1900 – has been completely refurbished to meet International museum standards and the theme of perforated metal is continued through to the ceiling of the grand turbine hall. Contemporary, unique and so very stylish, Malmö’s new museum provides the city with an exciting new icon… Link here.

Devin McGrath

‘ The Artist currently known as Devin McGrath is a modest man. Eschewing such terms as “genius” and “one-man cultural zeitgeist”, he has forged an artistic career that is the envy of his entire family. Compared by some critics to those elephants who have been trained to hold a paintbrush, his style is unmistakable and inimitable. With the artistic impulse flowing through his veins like hepatitis, Devin McGrath’s illustrations tell us of a man, with a keen eye; perhaps even two keen eyes and a skilled hand. It is, paradoxically, with this freakish and presumably hideous hand covered in eyes that he searches for the inherent beauty in everyday circumstance. ‘

Toaster Oven by Plus Minus Zero

untitled-111

Plus Minus Zero designers gave this Toaster Oven a nice and soft appearance to avoid it to become a boring object considering it’s something to be used every day. Structure is minimal: a pure white parallelepiped (on which there’s the Plus Minus Zero logo) with at its base the buttons for turning it on and setting the temperature. From the chromatic and morphological purity, timer led figures stand out. Link here.

” I love to draw and I draw what I love. My work reflects my personality and the things that are most meaningful and sentimental to me. Man-made vs. Nature and the connection of all living things are common themes I enjoy illustrating. Combining that with my passion for texture, balance, pattern, fashion, and femininity, my work can become quite surreal and dream-like. Charming juxtapositions and fantastical, sometimes made up symbolism and allusions dwell within most of my art, but telling a story though my work is not a high priority, rather I find it more interesting when the viewer creates their own meaning. It is also not my intention to create an exact likeness, rather, while drawing a portrait, I try to capture their essence, what I believe to be his or her most pure, and enlightened, even awkward form, none the less, beautiful. Drawing is very spiritual and meditative for me, and when I am creating, I feel calm and at one with my surroundings, specifically with the art work, thus it becomes part of me, almost like a view into my brain at any specific moment, and strangely autobiographical. Speaking only the truth is what I long for. Nowhere in any of my pieces will one ever find a shard of falsehood. Relying purely on intuition and self, I create artworks which scratch at your senses, force you to think, and ultimately help you locate a piece of yourself which you never knew existed. It’s something deep within your brain, completely primitive and visceral, but intentionally universal; love and rhythm. ” - Brett Manning

The newest addition to IJburg can already be seen from the A10 interstate near exit 114 and has already been given a name: the xxx’s. A prominent and elegant building, formed by a diagonal grid covering the façades. From the interior or the balcony, a striking view across the water with the A10 as a background. 3Years ago, BNB architects and B06 architect-firm took the initiative in self-developing an office building for their own use. The municipality gave them a 2 month option on a building plot on Steigereiland with a GFA capacity of 3500 m2. In this period a sketch design had to be drawn, 65% of letters of intent to be gathered and a financial plan had to be realised. On their own, the two firms were good for 700 m2, thereby creating the idea of CBC. Anyone who decides to join becomes commissioner and is therefore able to participate in decisions and buys condominium at cost. Within 2 months, 8 end users had been found eager to participate in developing their own office, giving the option on the plot a follow-up. Click here for the link.

DCKT Contemporary presents HELEN ALTMAN’s solo exhibition of mixed media works. ALTMAN explores notions of reality versus artificiality in everyday life. Her interest in mimicry and replicas results in objects that are convincing and sincere while simultaneously absurd in their obvious artificiality. Lotus Bed consists of lotus leaf skulls on top of a chenille bedspread with cocoons sewn on. The skulls resemble something an insect would make and the cocoons mimic wasp eggs sometimes laid on living caterpillars that serve as the host for the growing wasp larvae. Here, the bedspread itself (“chenille” translates from French as “caterpillar”) serves as host. The bed becomes a victim and the stand-in for the absent sleeper.
