Ammonite Washbasin

Concrete washbasin shaped as a fossil from HighTech. “Ammonites are an extinct species of cephalopods which lived in the sea about 400 million years ago. Their shells are found all over the world and they are very much sought-after by fossil-hunters, their collector’s value depending on size and the state of preservation. The fascinating shape of ammonite fossils – which resembles a rolled up helix – is the basic design element in the new HighTech washbasin. The association of water and fossil design is a clear allusion to the prehistoric inspiration for the Ammonite washbasin.” (via Trendir)

I am amazed that some people find it so difficult to wipe toothpaste off day to day life must be hell for you guys. It wouldn’t be any different than any other sink. Just wipe…
This sink is definitely awesome- both the aesthetic appeal, and when the water is turned on as it goes down the spiral. Would love a source and pricing details.

White tooth paste…. black matte sink just wouldn’t be the same after a few days.
Use kitchen sink or spit in the hole.

To all who are asking “how much”, this looks like a custom job and it will be different for everyone depending on the shape of the sink and the person who does the job. Probably the best way to find out what it would cost you would be to find someone in your area who does work like this and tell them what you want (or better yet, print these pictures out and show them). They should be able to give you a quote for the work. Keep in mind that since the sink pictured here is custom, it will be difficult to recreate it exactly.
As for the toothpaste discussion, there are sealers that can be applied to concrete to make it non-porous so that stuff like toothpaste doesn’t sink in and can be wiped off easily (see http://tiny.cc/bi96S).

The little ridgy bits of the ammonite shell seem to resemble a tiny staircase which the water tumbles & dances down just like Fred Astaire. In reality this kind of staircase could lead to accidents and that old US favourite the lawsuit. So all in all, a fairly dangerous concept that may also not embrace toothpaste spume dispersal particularly efficiently. Shame…

the fred astaire thing was cute, “stairs” “staire” adorable. as for sink accidents, i am pretty sure most people don’t get hurt in the sink but around it. i should sue you for slandering the united states love for lawsuits.

Do you mean practicality?! I’m sure you meant that instead of practicalness… in any case, I would put this sink in a powder room where everyone could see it and no one would brush their teeth in it. Just where guests could wash their hands and then tell me how much they LOVE the sink.

WOW!!! Talk about bitter folk. My goodness guys, it’s a sink and everyone is going to have their won thoughts about it, no need to attack each other for it. It’s small mindedness like that that keeps our society stuck in the rut it’s in. So what if one person may find it hard to cleen toothpaste out of it, who gives a shit if someone else doesnt like the color. The fact of the matter is simply this, everyone has their own thoughts and ideas and the sooner we all tune into that the sooner we will have a more peacefull society.
And BTW I like the sink I would also round down the edges and choose one of the other six colors that it is offered in, but I happen to think that it is unique and has a very simple beauty to it!

Amonite Lover
I can’t believe everyone likes this for the sink aspect more than the amonite aspect. I mean, come on, it’s an amonite, right in your wash-room, bulbous also tapered, and, as a previous poster mentioned, allows the foods and waters to dance down the sink like a liquid Fred Astaire! I would prefer of course one that handles solids.
As for the toothpaste spume and its cleaning, I must say that I never clean that out anyway. It would build up and create beautiful rime and scum, much like the amonite organism itself.

I bought a home with a clam style sink, with ridges inside and out that travel all the way to the floor, as it is a pedestal style sink. quite nice looking, as for cleaning, yeah, it can be tedious, but all in all, I’d give another 5 minutes for the stylish look. Attractive piece in my opinion. Well worth the extra minute or two spent to clean. But if cleaning it is what you’re worried about, you’re not likeley to be one interested in it in the first place.

Such a paradox…….NOT!
It’s cute for sure, but why have we forgotten that form follows function? An interesting water feature as designed, but near useless after that. So my final remark is, design schools need to stop rewarding this kind of thought so much. Sure it’s fine to bring out creativity in first year students but once you are in the working world, your work shouldn’t look like a first year project anymore.

gee, tap dancing will never be the same dangerous act which it always had been in the past,
Before when i fell into the sink, (after shuffling myself into oblivion); that was it ! because i’d be slipping my way down the drain hole.
But with this new design i can jump down off of the tap and dance down the tiny staircase with ease ( and maybe up the stairs again to try to jump back on the slippery tap….weeeee !!!

It is beautiful, but the designer has decided how much water I can have in my basin and that takes the interactivity out it. Forget the toothpaste, How about if you wanted to run an inch of water to shave or wash your face. Out of luck.
I like the powder room idea where people are only going to do one thing with it and be gone.

I had a sink exactly like that a few years ago in a previous home, except that it was a lot rounder, and the color was different. Also, the drain hole was right in the center and it didn’t have the spiral shape at all. It was basically a round bowl, kind of like normal sinks. Actually, come to think of it, it probably was a normal sink.

Not photoshop, this is a 3D rendering made with 3D Studio Max or Maya. Not a real sink but a design so you probably can’t buy it.

Good luck trying to do something as simple as washing your hands without water splashing over the basin, especially on the right hand side.
This design makes the effective useful area of the sink around 4″ (to the right of the spout). Bravo.

It’s available in several colours from High Tech (see link under image). The glass fiber concrete has been sealed so that toothpaste and beauty products wipe off easily and if there’s a stain then a bit of cleaning vinegar or baking soda and a microfiber cloth should take care of that very easily. I’ve seen sinks from this manufacturer in several places here in Europe and they are very attractive. Clearly not for in a family bathroom, but there is enough of a choice of sinks not to have to get too bothered about the fact that this sink is not the most practical.

Tips for those who apparently have a very hard time washing toothpaste out of their sinks………………….As soon as you spit, wash the sink out. Don’t let the toothpaste sit in there and you won’t have a problem.
As for the sink….it’s beautiful and very creative.

THANK YOU, Desiree, for being the only one to acknowledge the Golden Ratio! Meagan, regardless of the fact that it’s a sink, it is mathematically beautiful, and the fact that you don’t see that is unsettling. That said, the whole toothpaste thing could be troublesome. Nevertheless, The designer most likely meant it to be an art piece used in an upscale restaurant, law office, or lounge(i.e., more for rinsing, less for brushing).

What the fuck is wrong with you people? Shave in your shower or bath tub and wash your hair there while your at it. The only thing I read that might be troublesome was the water pressure problem. The price, on average, for an item as custom as this s approximately $500 usd. This is an easy weekend project for someone who has handy person skills. If you hurt your self with a tool while performing remedial projects, like a face plate removal or on occasion need help with a jar of jelly this project is not for you. It consists of 5 bags of cement, some rebar, some silicone sealant and a form to pour it into. In a a day you’ll have your own personalized vanity with the equivalent weight of a marble counter top. omg toothpaste sticks OUT of where the water runs this design makes it so where you spit is where the water flows, and the knob can obviously get much better pressure out considering it’s BARELY ON, it’s be great because of the beauty and easier to clean design unless that is you can’t spit straight..
