Natasha Lawes

‘ I am truly part of the Blue peter generation, I just love making and decorating, whatever the medium or subject. My father the late David Lawes, was a Scenic Artist working for theater companies such as the Royal Opera House & ENO and this wet my appetite for working with many mediums, production design & all things theatrical. My interest in Tech-effect costume also blossomed from a young age when he worked with the amazing costume designer Eiko Ishioka. My mother was a brilliant potter, and that inspired me to work with clay, to sculpt & to model make. I went on to study at Chelsea College of Art & Design in 1994 where I honed my skills in painting, sculpting, design & illustration. ‘ - Natasha Lawes

I dont know if you were trying to play on words or what you were doing but “wet my appetite”? The word you were looking for was “whet” not wet, I just dont understand why people who think they are brilliant are so idiotic about language. by the way your pics are obviously a strange but obvious deviation from anything mainstream which makes them all that more idiotic.

I think this artist has a great sense of perception.
Don’t worry about people who have to waste their time picking you apart. Those type of people will try to pull you down in your dreams and careers, yet they are too scared to go out and experience life for what it is. Congrats to you for getting out there and doing something great. I appreciate it, and others will also.

Very cool pics. I especially enjoyed Her Majesty’s Stratocaster.
Wow, Christopher: your mastery of the English language is without parallel. Thank you for sharing it with us! You might as well have gone on to point out that that the past tense of whet is actually whetted–you were probably only being kind.
However, if you are going to ridicule the language of another in the future, could you do us all a gigantic goddamn favor and maybe check your own shit first? No one likes that uncomfortable, embarrassing feeling that descends like a slimy mist when an incorrigible moron walks into the virtual room.
For instance, you might research the proper usage of apostrophes, how to capitalize the first letter of a sentence (it’s easier than you think!), and when it’s necessary to insert commas. This last bit will really add that grown-up flair to your prose, douchebag.
At the moment, it’s really obviously obvious that you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about, but we appreciate your right to publicly make a complete ass of yourself at your leisure. Thanks for contributing positively to a productive arts discussion!

I think these are just fabulous the detail in each one is just amazing.
Don’t take notice of Mr Christopher I-Have-A-Rod-Up-My-Ass. He clearly has no idea of the amazing effort that has gone into the creation of these.

In reply to Christopher J. Callagher’s comment….
She’s a photographer, not an English major. The slip up with “wet” versus “whet” is so small that the only sort of person who would point it out is someone seeking to make themselves look intelligent by doing so. A person can be incredibly gifted with art and still have horrible grammar or spelling. I’m afraid we’re not all geniuses at every aspect of life like you are.
As far as the pictures go, they are very lovely. The costumes and makeup are flawless, and the composition of the photographs is beautiful. Thank you for posting this.

Wait…of everything on this page, you criticize someone’s misspelling of whet? That’s fairly fickle friend. You’re probably better off if you just go fuck yourself for being so spiteful. Maybe then you’ll calm down about someone’s inability to spell and be a happier person for it.

Who peed in your cornflakes, Chris?
Using “Whet” instead of “wet” is hardly an unforgivable oversight for someone who isn’t in an English related profession; especially considering that ‘wet one’s appetite’ actually makes sense for people who are unaware of the existence of the word ‘whet.’ The word is a relic. When have you last heard of someone referencing their ‘whetstone’, or of the word being used outside the context of ‘whetting one’s appetite?’
In addition, this is a quote from her. Who knows whether it was an author transcribing for her while she spoke, perhaps in an interview?
I don’t know why you people who think you are so brilliant about language are so idiotic about everything else.
By the way, “don’t” contains an apostrophe, champ.
Back on subject, these are amazing.
I love the juxtaposition of old and new, and the detail given in each. Especially the symbolism in the Hamlet portrait.

How much visual fun your hard work has produced!
Looking forward to stumbling over more of your work. Thank you!
Obviously, Christopher was all wet. Lovely for so many noting it- and some so cleverly. I can easily imagine him cringing under his petarded whetstone (and yes, Christopher, I made that word up for your inflammatory interest).

In response to Christopher J. Callagher - I understand what you’re saying however I wouldn’t go bashing people’s spelling abilities and then replace “photos” with “pics”, kind of defeats the purpose, don’t you think? Although, the point you’re reaching for is commendable, and I do agree with your pointing out the mainstream tendencies of this specific collection of False symbolically artistic expression including that which sweeps the country apart from this, please don’t stoop so low as to shorten a word like “photos” really. Also, I do enjoy the third photo just for the irony of Germany having wanted to take France. Wel done on that one.

Most creative people (who’ve gone to college) take a great interest in the details so knowing “wet” from “whet” IS actually important.
I’m just saying…
But these pictures are very clear even though they’re so elaborate and ornate.
I’m gonna keep on stumblin’ now…

amazing photos with stunning detail — i truly enjoyed all of these.
as for our dear friend chris: what we have encountered is an educated and refined troll of gargantuan proportions. responding to him and taking the focus off of the artist is, by far, giving him a trophy for his efforts. i hope this comment on him might be the last and others will ignore the pretentious asswipe’s rhetoric.

Photography is one of those things I have always wanted to get into. But even with all the things I had plotted and planned, something amazing like this never occured to me. Mixing historical figures and dress with just a bit of modern age may not seem like much of note to some people, something like a iPod held by Cleopatra seems so simple. And yet it hasnt been done before that I see. After looking all these amazing photos over though, I have to wonder. How much farther could you take this if you tried? I look forward to seeing more of your beautiful work!

I agree with Casey.
These pictures are awesome, I think. It made me smile to see Egyptian royalty listening to what looks like an iPod Classic, which I find funnier because nowadays both are really old.

i think that Chrstopher Callagher is being a-holey and needs to realize that some people like to express themselves in different ways, even if their way is as small as spelling words differently or misusing words!

and lonna shouldn’t agree with chris unless she wants to get a shit-load of crap about it too.

Despite not wishing to be a boor, like our dear friend Christopher, I still find it necessary to defend his views on the use of ‘wet’. Though his post leaves much to be desired, nor is it a relevant critique to the piece, there remains the fact that language is critical as a medium for communicating a message. Following from that, the wider command one has, the more impact and meaning the message contains. Fundamentally the accuracy of use, and the subtleties of both denotation and connotation, of words and phrases, are the basis of the beauty of language.

Wow, beautiful, elegant, pithy work! It’s always nice to Stumble somewhere and get a surprise like this. Really nice.
Of course, the internet being what it is, it’s absolutely no surprise at all to see the comments polluted by bitter trolling. Such a shame that this awesome sharing medium is a haven for anonymous boorish know-it-alls who are completely unaware how to express certain criticisms politely, or even if they’re even necessary).

Hey, Callagher, you knew what she meant, didn’t you? She communicated her thoughts to us in a clear, comprehensible manner. And that, mon frere, is what she was trying to do. So back the fuck off and just take in her unbelievably creative work.
Lawes, I don’t know where you came from, but you sure were paying attention, wherever it was. Thank you for making me look at things in a different way. Great work. Inspiring.
BTW, I am both a professional English teacher and a professional photographer. I don’t give a “whit” about your “wet whet”. The internet is an appropriate place for informal language use, when we want it to be. Like now, f’rinstance. Don’t worry about Mr. Dipstick–he’s all whet! Peace out.

As far as Mr. Douchebag goes:

Nice photographs, though I am not a huge fan of the more digital-looking graphics. Obviously Chris was being a bit of a wanker, but I think Rhea shoots herself in the foot a little when criticising his abbreviation of photos to pics. Photos is a shortened version of photographs anyway.

I’m gonna totally ignore the artwork and comment on the comments.
That was a little sarcasm there. I’m lol’ling out loud like a crazy fool here, ha ha!

I realise it has been said and re-said, but whhat tha heck… i’m a 5 fingered king o typos! …. yet somehow i manage to turn out some really rather good Photography and photoshop work… Cripes, I run a Café (oh Christopher, it’s ‘Alt Gr + é to produce the accents, tip for ya) with a dyslexic friend, so i spell and he writes (i’m a r/arm amputee) , we manage to manage success. amazing huh?
all i have to say otherwise is you Twat! Utter Twat!
what you did was akin to somebody proudly showing you an extravagant extension plan for their house, and all you have to say is ‘wanker, where are you gonna lean the broom now you’ve taken that wall out? huh? Idiotic, sooo idiotic”
yup,Christopher J. Callagher , You Twat , even your surname is a typo!

I apologise for my remarks made at the top of this comment board. You are all correct in your assumptions of myself. When I wrote that comment, it was just five days after my life partner passed away from cancer. While I’m sure nobody here cares, I wanted to explain my bitterness at the time. I apologise to everyone I may have offended, as well at the artist. I truly made an ass of myself.

Wonderful photography. Although this is major overkill (the comments about spelling, etc.) and this comment will, no doubt, raise some eyebrows (mine included, as I believe in the proper use of language and grammar), I think that if there is no ambiguity in the writing and the message is clear, we must make some allowances for the various possible reasons for spelling and grammatical errors when this is somewhat secondary to the purpose of the presentation, as it seems to be in this writing. I suppose that was a run-on sentence itself. I very much enjoyed viewing these photographs.

This concept has been done to death. I am bored of seeing images like this. Can’t artists come up with something new these days? Rehashing other people’s work, with one or two subtle variations, is not original.

I agree with the previously raised concerns that while beautiful, these images are somewhat stale in concept. However the artist is talented and if she were to push herself, then she might create some great work in the future.

Obviously, Mr. Callagher has an excellent command of language. Never mind the redundancy.
These shots are truly excellent and entertaining. Partially reminiscent of the pictures taken for the ‘I Spy’ books that were popular when I was a kid.
Hell, those books are still awesome. And like those books, your pictures most certainly have a feel given the nature of the series. After noticing the odd object in the first picture, I immediately became excited to look at the other photos.
Too bad your dissenters sound like fixie riding indie snobs who are consistent in thinking that the shittier something is, the more credible it happens to be.

these remind me of dina golstein’s fallen princesses. i know essentially nothing about photography/art but i like the similar way both artists draw out “historical” (fantasy) characters from their normal contexts. pretty cool. of course, the costumes and attention to details are impressive too. nice.
