‘ From Stayokay, the famous Kubuswoningen, designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom in the 1980’s, are now a hotel. In December 2009 the Cube Houses became the most modern of Rotterdam’s listed buildings. The new Stayokay Rotterdam hostel officially opened March 24th. ‘ (via Mocoloco)

‘ Based on the concept of the Japanese convenience store, 24 Issey Miyake shops combine inexpensive prices, a large variety of colours and frequent changes in the product lineup. Nendo have created their latest store. The miyake team wanted a new design concept for the 24 issey Miyake shop in Shibuya’s Parco shopping complex, which includes a store that specially features Miyake’s new bilbao bag. ‘ (via Designboom)

‘ Dan Brill Architects of the UK are among 12 international practices shortlisted to design a pedestrian footbridge for Trestles Beach, a surf spot in southern California. The Safe Trestles design competition, organised by Architecture for Humanity, sought designs that give provide surfers access to the beach from the road on the bluff above, carrying them safely across a railway line while protecting the fragile dunes. ‘ (Continue reading…)

On a 6,000 square meter UK Pavilion site sits the Seed Cathedral carefully centered. The Seed Cathedral is 20 meters tall and is formed from 60,000 slender transparent fiber optic rods. Each fiber optic rod is 7.5 meters long and encloses one or more seeds at its tip. During the day, they draw daylight inwards to illuminate the interior. At night, light sources inside each rod allowing the entire structure to glow. When the wind blows the optic “hairs” gently move as they create a dynamic effect for the viewers. Inside the darkened inner chamber of the Seed Cathedral” the tips of the fiber optic filaments form an apparently hovering galaxy of slim vitrines containing a vast array of embedded seeds.” (via Yatzer)
